Batter

Contestant Information: Fezzik

Home Town: Southern Ohio
Age: 43
Profession: I bet on sports

Do you remember the first bet you ever made?
That’s a great question. My first recollection of a point spread, this is a pretty good story. I didn’t actually bet on it, but I remember growing up in Ohio, when Cleveland was playing against Denver and I saw it in the newspaper. I wasn’t old enough to bet, I didn’t bet on it, but I remember I saw Cleveland was a 3 point favorite against Denver and I knew Denver had a terrible road team. I just loved Cleveland and it was a war the entire game and Cleveland finally took the lead at the game. And I remember, I said, it was a mighty struggle, but I was completely right. Cleveland were the right guys. And then Denver won the game with a 99 yard drive. That’s great.

How old were you?
I think I was in my late teens. I think the game was in the 80s, so I was like probably around my 20s, something around there.

Can you tell me what your most memorable bet have ever been?
There was a year that Oakland was playing Tampa Bay and they put a line up on who was going to have more punts in the game. And I believe they had Tampa Bay favored to punt more by 2.5, so Tampa Bay was minus 2.5 total punts, versus Oakland. That was memorable, because that could have been the worst number I’ve ever seen in entire betting life. So, I had Oakland punts plus 2.5 which was pretty much stealing, so that was memorable just because it was so wrong.

How about the biggest bet you’ve ever made?
I’d rather not say.

What is your favorite sport?
Football, certainly football. It used to be NFL, now it’s college football.

What is your favorite team?
Don’t have one. Whoever I bet on that weekend.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?
The one thing I might say is that so often you hear about there being the right side and a wrong side on games and the message I’d like to get out there is that there really isn’t the right side or wrong side on almost all the games. There’s a right price on games. There’s this myth that, oh you know, Nebraska is playing USC (that’s the big game this weekend) that there’s a right side. The truth is Nebraska opened up + 4 and that’s great bet. And Nebraska +18 would be an equally great bet. If you move a point spread enough and what was a right side could become a very wrong side.

Have you entered any other contests of this kind?
I’ve been in the Stardust Invitational, I was finalist two of the years. In I think 2003 and 2005 and I was in the Leroy’s Pete Bogdonovich contest last year, Nick and I and we had a lot of fun with that. That was one of the funnest contests that I’ve ever been a part of. Just because, it was heads-up that we both did so well. I don’t think that we or anyone else is ever going to be able to duplicate that. That was a lot of fun.
